We can't be the only one's missing going out on a Sunday morning, so it's time to learn how to make brunch at home. We promise there won't be too much nonsense before the recipes actually start. No enlightening summer camp or backpacking through Europe stories here. In fact, let's jump right in.
Our favorite bloody mary recipe
At Corkscrew Agency, we ALL love a good bloody mary. Can you blame us? The only problem is they're hard to make at home! Even restaurants sometimes have a hard time staying consistent in their bloody marys. Luckily, we found one that's worked out pretty well for us the last few times we experimented in the kitchen.
1 48 ounce can of tomato juice (about 6 cups)
3 tablespoons prepared creamy hot horseradish (yum)
3 tablespoons worcestershire sauce (takes some of the tomato-y-ness away)
2 1/4 teaspoons celery salt
3 teaspoons garlic salt
Tabasco or cholula sauce (or whatever you like really)
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Vodka to taste, pickle infused vodka is pretty killer too
When you're actually assembling the drinks, add another tablespoon of celery salt and one tablespoon of kosher salt (the sodium content is real, y'all – feel free to cut a teaspoon of each).
Here are your bloody mary mixing instructions:
Combine the tomato juice, horseradish, worcestershire sauce, celery salt, garlic salt and black pepper in a pitcher or something you can pour out of. Season with 10-15 shakes of Tabasco sauce, or more if you like it HOT. Refrigerate until you're ready to serve.
To assemble drinks, mix your celery salt and kosher salt on a small plate or saucer. Dip the rim of your glass in a shallow amount of water, then place it into the salt mix and turn it till the rim is beautifully covered. Fill your glass almost to the top with ice. Add 2 (or 3, it's a quarantine after all) ounces of vodka then top with bloody mary mix.
This is the fun part! Garnish your drink with anything you like. Limes, lemons, olives, pickles or anything pickled really. Add bacon strips, pepperoncinis, or cooked shrimp. Even chunks of cheese all work great. Although, maybe not all at the same time.
Special shoutout to Anvil Pub in Deep Ellum for hooking Dallas up with the most insane bloody marys the world has ever seen (probably). They go to extremes with sliders, fried chicken and more as garnish.
Y'all want to learn how to make brunch too right? Of course you do. Let's get into everyone's favorite dish – avocado toast! This version is a bit elevated, however.
Avocado toast brunch recipe
Look, avocado toast is pretty simple, so why is it so good when you get it at your favorite brunch spot? Here are the secrets to amazing avo toast.
Pick good quality bread. Thick whole grain toast is a great option, but you can also go for a nice focaccia or even ciabatta.
Use Hass avocados that are ripe. You should be able to give them a gentle squeeze. Be generous with your avocado and mash it separately, not on the bread.
Hit the whole thing with some salt and pepper (we like a touch of paprika too).
The great thing about this meal is you can elevate it in a variety of ways. We love to add a fried egg (scrambled works well too). You may also choose to add garlic, hot peppers, herbs, and/or tomatoes and onions.
Some awesome variations we've experimented with are as follows:
Avocado Everything Bagel
You can throw your recipe on a bagel OR add some everything bagel seasoning on top of the avocado toast you've already made. Careful, though, because it can get salty fast.
Loaded Avo Toast
Mix chopped fresh radish, bacon, jalapeño slices and toasted sunflower seeds. Load. It. Up!
Tomato-Basil With Balsamic Drizzle
This variation is only as good as your tomatoes, so get badass tomatoes. Top your avocado toast with a few slices, add a light drizzle of thick balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze, and some torn fresh basil leaves. A sparse amount of fresh mozzarella never hurt either. Don't use too much or it will overpower your toast.
There you go guys. A little brunch inspiration in these dark times. Just like all of you, we're waiting and praying for our favorite restaurants to come back stronger. Thanks for reading!
